Open-text questions give you the richest feedback in any survey — but reading hundreds of free-form answers by hand is slow. SurveyTale's AI Insights tools help you make sense of open-text responses faster by summarizing what people said and surfacing recurring themes, so you can spend your time acting on feedback instead of sorting through it.

AI Insights is part of the Ultra plan. If you're on Free or Pro, you'll see a prompt to upgrade when you try to use these features.

What AI Insights does

AI Insights focuses on the parts of a survey that are hardest to analyze manually — the open-ended, free-text answers. At a high level, it can help you:

• Summarize open-text responses — generate a short, readable overview of what respondents wrote for a given question.
• Surface common themes — group similar answers so you can see the topics that come up most often.
• Highlight notable feedback — call attention to representative or standout responses worth reviewing in full.

The goal is to give you a fast, directional read on qualitative feedback. AI-generated summaries are a starting point for analysis, not a replacement for reading the responses that matter most to your decision.

How AI Insights works

When you run an AI tool on a question, SurveyTale sends the relevant open-text answers to an AI provider, which processes the text and returns a summary or set of themes. A few things to keep in mind:

• Response text is processed by an AI provider. The open-text content for the question you analyze is sent to a third-party AI service to generate the result.
• AI output can be imperfect. Summaries are generated automatically and may occasionally miss nuance or misread context. Always verify anything you plan to act on against the underlying responses.
• It works best on open-text. AI Insights is designed for free-form answers. Closed questions (like multiple choice or rating scales) are already best analyzed through the standard Summary and charts views.

Using AI Insights on your responses

You'll typically use AI Insights from within your survey's results. The general flow is:

1. Open the survey whose responses you want to analyze.
2. Go to the results area and open the Summary (or responses) view.
3. Find an open-text question you'd like to understand better.
4. Start the AI tool for that question — for example, generating a summary or pulling out themes.
5. Review the generated insight, then read through the individual responses behind it to confirm the takeaways.

From there, you can use the insights to guide next steps — sharing a summary with your team, prioritizing follow-ups, or filtering responses to dig into a specific theme.

Tips for better results

• Collect enough responses first. AI summaries are more reliable when there's a meaningful volume of answers to work from. Very small samples may produce thin or skewed summaries.
• Write clear open-text questions. Specific prompts (for example, "What's the main reason for your score?") tend to produce more focused, summarizable answers.
• Use AI as a first pass. Let it point you toward the themes and standout responses, then read the raw answers for the topics that matter most.
• Combine with filtering. Narrow responses by segment or answer before summarizing to compare how different groups responded.

Plan & access

AI Insights and the related smart tools are available on the Ultra plan, which unlocks SurveyTale's AI features along with its other advanced capabilities. If these tools appear locked, you're likely on the Free or Pro plan — upgrading to Ultra enables them across your workspace.

Privacy considerations

Because AI Insights sends open-text response content to an AI provider for processing, treat it like any other feature that handles respondent data:

• Be mindful of running AI tools on questions that may contain sensitive or personal information.
• Consider what you ask in open-text fields if the answers will be processed by AI.
• Follow your own organization's data-handling and privacy policies when analyzing and sharing AI-generated summaries.
